Sea of Thieves Behind the Scenes: NPC and Dialogue System
Sea of Thieves is one of those games that does a great job of blending a gameplay-driven experience, lore and social elements into singular RPG. And the developers are pretty excited, and you should be too,
The developers released a new video talking about the development process behind NPCs, and their post-launch plans to allow players to influence the lore of the world of Sea of Thieves.
The video stars Design Director Mike Chapman and Software Engineer Topher Winward as they talk about NPCs. Those NPCs will adjust their dialogue and quest offerings depending on what players are doing in the game at that time.
It’s a more general system than say a strict reputation system, and it’s meant to evolve over time as more players interact with the in-game factions and quests.
In-game items can also be manipulated by player actions as well. For example, books and scrolls found in the game might referenced notable player actions in-lore. So there’s definitely some attempts being made with Sea of Thieves to push immersion in interesting ways,
Sea of Thieves will release for Xbox One and PC on March 20th, 2018.
